The Duncan Chapel Fire District is a property tax supported Special Purpose District in Greenville County, South Carolina. It was created by a favorable vote of its residents and enacted to existence by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina. The District provides fire protection, life safety, rescue, and medical services to approximately 9,500 permanent residents and up to 3,000 temporary residents in an area encompassing slightly more than eight square miles.
In the center of the District resides the 800 plus acre campus of Furman University which hosts sporting and special events that attract crowds of up to 25,000 people. Recent guest appearances to the Furman campus included President George W. Bush (2008), Governor Mike Huckabee (2008), Senator Hillary Clinton (2008), Senator Barack Obama (2008), the Ambassador of China (2009), the President of Lybia (2009), and HRH Prince Edward of England (2010).
Flanking two sides of the Furman University campus are US Highway N. 25 By-Pass and South Carolina State Highway 276. These two highways carry over 40,000 vehicles daily through the Duncan Chapel Fire District (DCFD).
Additional critical infrastructure within the Duncan Chapel Fire District includes the newly developing campus of the Holmes Bible College, the Woodlands at Furman retirement community, approximately three miles of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and a communications compound at the top of Paris Mountain consisting of towers and repeaters that support several local, state, and federal communications systems for essential service providers.
The Duncan Chapel Fire District protects and serves the properties, citizens, and visitors of the District as best as possible with a personnel roster of 24 members; 8 career paid personnel and 16 volunteer responders from one station. In 2009, Duncan Chapel Fire District responders answered 838 calls for service as well as provided event stand-by coverage on the Furman University Campus with emergency personnel.
